The Detroit Red Wings are close to locking down one of their top forwards.
Alex DeBrincat and the Red Wings are closing in on a seven-year extension, a deal that would carry a $13-million average annual value, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
The Farmington Hills, Mich., native had two goals and an assist in Tuesday's overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils, giving him four goals and eight points over the first six games of Detroit's season. He is playing out the final year of a four-year deal with a $7.875-million AAV and has indicated he wanted to remain with his hometown team.
"I love playing for the Red Wings. I love wearing that jersey and battling with those guys out there," DeBrincat said at the NHL player media tour this summer. "My intention is obviously to stay in Detroit. We’ll see what happens, I guess."
DeBrincat had 41 goals and 44 assists in 82 games for the Red Wings in 2025-26, becoming only the fourth Red Wings player to score 40 goals in the salary cap era.
Currently in his 10th NHL season, the right-shot winger landed with Detroit in a trade with the Ottawa Senators in July 2023, which sent Dominik Kubalík, Donovan Sebrango, a 2024 first-round pick and a 2024 fourth-rounder the other way.
DeBrincat has played in 702 career games with Chicago, Ottawa and Detroit, racking up 298 goals and 603 points.
The 28-year-old was originally drafted in the second round of the 2016 draft by Chicago.
Tuesday's loss sent the 2026-27 Red Wings to 1-3-2 to open their campaign following an off-season of change.
Former general manager and franchise legend Steve Yzerman stepped down from the role in July and announced that he would be transitioning to a senior advisor role within the organization.
Shawn Horcoff is currently operating as the interim general manager and his plate has been full early as he navigates a contract negotiation with restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson and a trade request from former captain Dylan Larkin.
